DOES IT HELP TO KNOW THE FUTURE?

Question is “Does it help to know the future? Is it even possible? Many believe it is. But, does God still have a few tricks up His sleeve?”

Answer: The Noor that once descended in Krishna and so many others also descended in Ali. Ali has prophesied a lot about future happenings. Once he told his disciple Ammar that he would be killed under the same palm tree that he nurtured. He also said that p...rior to his killing, Ammar's tongue would be cut off. Ammar began watering the tree with even greater intensity because he knew that if Ali had said so, it was bound to happen. About 20 years after Ali's death, Ammar was summoned in the court of Ibn-e-Ziyad. When Ammar praised Ali in front of Ibn-e-Ziyad, he ordered that Ammar be taken and killed but prior to that his tongue should be taken out. Ammar laughed. Ibn-e-Ziyad asked what was the cause of his smile. Ammar replied that Ali had prophesied that he would be killed in exactly the same way. Ibn-e-Ziyad said that he would see to it that Ammar is not killed in the way Ali had prophesied. He asked Ammar to be taken to the prison from where very few came out alive. But it so happened that Ammar began preaching other inmates of the prison who revolted. Ammar was brought in front of ibn-e-Ziyad, who in a fit of rage, ordered that Ammar's tongue be taken out and he be killed.

This is just one incident that I have mentioned; though I can give countless more. The incident of a particular people may also be cited who had mastered astronomy greatly. They had dug a pond wherein they saw the reflections of stars and had calculated their ages. Each one of them knew how long would they live. They also committed all the sins and crimes. A Prophet of God went to them and told them to abstain from live of sin and crime. They said they know everything about their future. The Prophet told them to go to the pond again and see their future once more. They went and saw. They saw that death loomed at them. Before they could do anything, they were all dead. This story tells something very important. The heavenly bodies too are working under divine command and so are made the lines on our hands. The Prophet could have easily said that all your calculations are false and untrue. But he asked those people to go to the pond again. They went and saw for themselves that death was right at their faces. This shows that the science do exist and there are people who do read the future. But the Divine Will may change what has not been changed till now. For instance, my fate may change because of even the prayer for me by my mother. Or a good deed that I committed. It does not mean that God did not know of this before. He knew everything right from beginning but He himself has put everything under 'cause and effect'. This also shows that even my mother's prayer or a good deed has the capacity to alter the movement of heavenly bodies. That is why I repeatedly besiege one and all - do as much of good as possible, keeping the remembrance of God alive; always aspire for the truth and upholding of justice. As Krishna says, it is our evil deeds that are leading towards destruction of this earth. The world will soon be destroyed unless we correct ourselves.

Now one last argument! Hindu scriptures have talked at great length about the coming of Kalki avatar close to the end of the world. The Muslim scriptures have talked about the coming of Mahdi, which the Old Testament talks about a Messiach who would be arriving in the end times. Even Christians believe that Jesus has prophesied about a messiah. The Mayans of South America too were awaiting a messiah when they were overpowered by the Europeans. While some people who seem to have doubts about the power of One God to prophesy in different languages say that all these people have copied the same things from one another, there are others who are planning and conspiring to see to it that the prophesies do not get unfolded. I have shown from an example above that howsoever much they conspire, things will unfold as has been predicted by Divinity. But that does not mean we should cease to act. We will be judged in accordance with our deeds and even if God knows what would happen in future, we have been given a free fill to choose our own paths. A very curious question that arises is how is it possible that a messiah will arrive for each of the religions. Is it possible that a messiah will arrive for the Hindus and dharma will prevail all over, a messiah will arrive for the Muslims and Islam will be the world religion, a messiah will arrive for the Christians and Christianity will prevail and Judaism will be endorsed by the messiach? Truth is that all these are true statements. You will say how is it possible. The answer is the same that I have been giving all through. There is one path to God and all religions are deviations from that One Path. We all have digressed so much so that we have lost the path. Yet we all want to believe that ours is the true path. We ridicule the path of others considering our own path as the truth. The Messiah will be not a Hindu messiah or a Muslim messiah or a Jew or Christian messiah. He will be messiah from the One Lord of the Universe. He will come to preach the One Path to the Lord. All the Divine Scriptures that have source in the One Lord will get endorsed. Their true teachings will come to the forefront. And evil will be exposed. Once evil and misguidance gets exposed, the true path will shine brightly in front of each of us. That is why I say, to whatever religion you belong, if you believe that yours is the true path, think twice. The true path will be unveiled by the One Messiah that is set to arrive.

Strive… Purify yourself…Seek your own God with all your power…

I have been giving logical and reasonable proofs from scriptures to prove that the 14 Manus or Devas of Vedas actually took birth as humans and were called Ahlulbayt by the Quran. It is extremely unfortunate that the Hindus do not believe this to be true because of the false notions of Devas that they have created and their belief that Mlecchas (evil people) in the Manusmriti is reference to the Muslims and Christians. On the other hand, the Muslims consider the Hindus as idol-worshippers and hence Mushriks and therefore they don’t want to equate the Ahlulbayt with anything that has to do with the Hindus. Moreover, they have such internal differences related to Ahlulbayt that they themselves are not clear about their identity. None wants to know that for the Creator all humans – be they Hindus or Muslims – are equal and also equally deviant. The beliefs on which we grow up are so strongly embedded that we see all other things in the light of our beliefs. Even at times when we feel we are applying our mind, we are actually trying to equate all other things with our beliefs and hence we reach nowhere. They don’t know who the Devas are and are happy even if they don’t know about them even so if the Vedas say that they are the source of all wisdom, they are the rulers of our organs of action and senses and Gita says that we are thieves if we don’t offer our food to them. Likewise, even if Mohammad says that the Ahlulbayt are the saviours like the ark of Noah and says they are the rope to salvation, each of the Muslims, despite their deviant beliefs from one another, is of opinion that whatever conclusions he has drawn are true and correct.

Hear from me why you are not reaching the truth. Quran says that all Guidance is from God and you will never get the guidance if you do not really strive for it from the inner depths of your heart. When you purify yourself of your sins and do good deeds while keeping the remembrance of your God during all times (irrespective of whether you call Him Allah, Ishwar or God), and as your spirit ascends toward purity, and then you seek guidance with purity of heart, it will definitely come to you. But the pursuit has to be sincere. The endeavour has to be real. And done only for the Creator and none else. Unless you rid yourself of material lust, become inward looking rather than running after worldly desires and withdraws your organs of action and senses making them inward looking (as per the Upanishads), don’t expect the truth to come to you.

As said, guidance will come when you are at a certain level of spiritual ascent. If you are a Hindu, you surely believe in rebirth. While, as per Old Testament, it has been about 15000-20000 years since the first man, Hindus believe that there have been several million years. Why don’t you ponder that if you are still living on this earth even after so many years, it is because your spirit was incapable of getting out by attaining salvation? Why don’t you conclude that the Forces of Darkness (Satanic Forces) have won our spirit and dragged it step by step towards descent, and now we are in a pit from where only an extremely hard endeavour and sincere pursuit will take us out. If this is not true, then have you any answer why you are still living as human? The very fact that you are living is proof that you have failed to attain salvation. Because had you attained salvation there would have been no more births.

Remember, you probably have the last chance before life ends. Strive… Purify yourself…Seek your own God with all your power…I am not asking a Hindu to seek Allah or a Muslim to seek Ishwar. Hindus, seek the Ishwar and Muslims, seek your Allah. I am proving that they are one and the same but even for this realization to dawn, you still have to lead your spirit on the path of ascendance.

NOTES ON BUDDHA AND HIS DHAMMA [PART – 8]

The Madhyama Marg (Majjhima Patipada) that Buddha preached was the middle path, which was neither the path of pleasure nor the path of self-mortification. This was exactly as per the teachings of Krishna who denounced sanyas (by which was meant renunciation of all actions and leading a life of a heretic) and worldly actions like being engaged in entertainment and performing ritual sacrifices merely as an action and not as a tool for self-attainment. Said he:

“Only when the self in ye has been conquered that ye are free from lust; ye will then not desire worldly pleasures, and the satisfaction of your natural wants will not defile ye. Let ye eat and drink according to the needs of your body.”

We invite you to read Gita. Is not Krishna saying the same? Is it not apparent that both teachings had same origin? It is apparent from Buddha’s talk on the need to satisfy the needs of life and to keep the body in good health that he wanted his disciples to live in the society.

* * * * *

All the evils that were prevailing were either in connection with man’s relationship to God or man’s relationship with his self and self’s relation with the Manifest Self [Paramatma]. There were stories prevailing about God and many of these were false myths. As regards to self, people committed all kinds of sins and then performed ritual sacrifices in hope that this would take their self on path of elevation. There was another section which performed rituals in love for life after death. Humanity and doing good to others as a way of life was forgotten. Humane concerns were lost, which is evident from several narrations about the lives of priests and other so-called dignitaries. Therefore Buddha saying that his teachings have nothing to do with God does not mean that there is no God. Buddha emphasized on human relationship with other humans and left other things as they were already being practiced to the limit of excess. As Buddha said:

“The centre of his Dhamma is man and the relation of man to man in his life on earth.”

This he said was his first postulate.

His second postulate was that men are living in sorrow, in misery and poverty. The world is full of suffering and that how to remove this suffering from the world is the only purpose of Dhamma. Nothing else is Dhamma.”

The recognition of the existence of suffering and to show the way to remove suffering is the foundation and basis of his Dhamma.”

Surely, there is no denying the fact that entire Buddha’s teachings are centred on recognizing and removing suffering from this world. If we see Gita, stress is more on purity of self and attaining salvation. But if you read Gita with us, through our commentary, you will agree that the eventual focus is on trying to make each human a better person so that all the sufferings and evils of this mortal world are removed. There is no explanation for Krishna indulging in the war with Kauravas but that there was a need to fight the forces of evil, eventual purpose being to make this world a better place. Just as the consequence of such good acts is salvation in the case of Krishna, it is nirvana (salvation) in the case of Buddha.

Unfortunately, neither did the self-confessed followers adhere to Krishna’s teachings nor Buddha’s teachings. People understood the meaning of Self wrongly and devised rituals for the Self. Rest of the life, outside of rituals, they continued to live as before. The illusion of the self even contributed to people becoming more self-centred. Buddha’s teachings tried to do away with the evils which had crept in and we have to see them from this point.

We invite you to ponder at a very interesting point. In all the civilizations, teachings have been slowly upgraded. The first stage we witness all through the world is the attempt to identify the devas in the scheme of God’s things. Unfortunately, be it India, be it China, Egypt, Mesopotamia or Greece, or even Latin America, these devas began to be worshipped as gods. Then the teachings reached the second stage where the presence of self inside us, its relation with the Divine Self or Paramatma and consequently with God is emphasized upon. Preachers talking about human values and interrelationship between creations succeeded this. This was followed by the completion of teachings, which incorporated all the earlier teachings in a comprehensive package.

The same upward gradation of teachings, and in the same manner, is visible not only in India but also in the rest of the civilizations; including Chinese, Greek, Mesopotamian and Egyptian. When there was Krishna talking of self in India, there was a preacher talking on the same subject in Greece or China. Those who are called gods, and who were actually God’s own manifest form – the devas of the Vedas – were introduced in nearly all civilizations.

Likewise, you will find a striking similarity between the teachings of Buddha on human relationship and those of Jesus, who came about 500 years later. Unless we conclude that there was superhuman force working, it won’t be possible for us to understand why similar pattern of teachings is visible all around the world and around the same periods. So much so that the lands that were not discovered till then, like America or Australia too show the same pattern. Though, the similarity is more starkly visible in the case of five centres of civilization, viz. India, China, Mesopotamia, Greece and Egypt.

* * * * *

Were not Krishna or Rama too teaching about the Path of Purity; the Path of Righteousness and the Path of Virtue? Was not Moses or Jesus doing the same? This being the most difficult of the path to tread, it was not easy to understand. Therefore avatar (prophet) after avatar tried to develop the teachings.

Buddha needs to be saluted surely for his greatness. But his teachings for not meant to be transformed into a religion because if Buddhism is a religion, not Buddha alone, but also Rama and Krishna and several other avatars or enlightened persons that came in the Indian subcontinent contributed to it. Similar is the case of Hinduism; this is aptly reflected in the state of Hindus in India prior to Buddha commencing his teachings.

* * * * *

Likewise, wisdom and need to use one’s intellect too has always been the subject of discussion by most Messengers. Man is invited to use his wisdom. Anything that does not appeal to wisdom cannot be true religion. Only knowledge can give wisdom. Otherwise we often see people on TV shows like Big Fight who applause on a view presented by a person and again applause on the counter view presented by other. All believe they are wise but very few are able to use their wisdom; instead knowingly or unknowingly they keep following the views and/or dictates of others. At times, it is Satan or the Force of Darkness which is silently dictating its agenda without we realizing it.

Krishna has devoted an entire chapter to wisdom in Gita. Now see how Buddha describes it:

“Mind is the only instrument through which light can come to man.
“But the mind of these dungeon-dwellers is by no means a perfect instrument for the purpose.
“It lets through only a little light, just enough to show to those with sight that there is such a thing as darkness.
“Thus defective in its nature, such understanding as this is.
“But know, ye Parivrajas! The case of the prisoner is not as hopeless at it appears.
“For there is in man a thing called will. When the appropriate motives arise the will can be awakened and set in motion.
“With the coming of just enough light to see in what directions to guide the motions of the will, man may so guide them that they shall lead to liberty.
“Thus though no man is bound, yet he may be free, he may at any moment begin to take the first steps that will ultimately bring him to freedom.
“This is because it is possible to train the mind in whatever directions one chooses. It is mind that makes us to be prisoners in the house of life, and it is mind that keeps us so.
“But what mind has done, that mind can do. If it has brought man to thralldom, it can also, when rightly directed, bring him to liberty.”
This is Samma Ditti, which leads to destruction of Avijja (Nescience)” [Avidya of Krishna).

Buddha’s words here are extremely important and should not be taken lightly. Come, we invite all in the name of Buddha, Krishna and Mohammad to use their minds so as to do away with ignorance and attain the knowledge of the true path. As Buddha said: “The Path of Virtue must, therefore, be subject to test of Prajna which is another name for understanding and intelligence.”

THE TRUE CONTENT OF THE VEDAS (PART-I)

When I pasted the fifth shloka 10th hymn of Book I of Rig Veda along with its translation, our friend Rahul Shastri, after doing meticulous study on the subject, made the following comments: (i) Rigvedic hymns have invocative powers and are recited in homes to invoke the blessing and protection of gods. (I will read ‘god’ as ‘devas’, as this is the most misunderstood term and the original Sanskrit text talk of devas, which have been translated by commentators as gods.) (ii) Prophecy is not their intent. (iii) Often, as in this case, they describe the benefits that flow from invocation. (iv) Rahul Shastri says that my translation is flawed and the first line of the shloka may be translated thus: उक्थम्-इन्द्र-अय शंस्यं वर्धनं पुरु-निष्षिधे, i.e.: Recitation of Indra’s good fortune, is desirable, to heaven elevates. (v) Rahul Shastri says that “the word शक्रः, seems to apply to Indra, who is so called because he is powerful (see Apte). It also means Lord, and fourteen. While Lord seems to make sense in the context of the benefits the recitation bestows, fourteen does not seem to make sense.” Let’s discuss these issues in detail:

We are all aware that the Vedas are replete with mention of Indradeva, Vayudeva, Agnideva, Vasudeva, etc. The Vedas, in actuality, are the real source of all information that we possess about these names and also formed the basis of all the myths and legends that came into existence subsequently, which were to find place in later period works like Puranas, Ramayana and Mahabharata. However, kindly remember that Puranas, Ramayana and Mahabharata are not revealed scriptures from God or devas and were mere compilations by common men like you and me. Therefore, what they say is not final, but what the Vedas and Upanishads, and what Gita says, is final indeed.

Rishi Dayananda Saraswati (to be called RDS henceforth) is considered one of the greatest commentators of Vedas, along with Sayanacharaya. It is Rishi Dayananda Saraswati’s commentary that we took up for study and hence would like to talk about it first.

A true reformist that he considered himself to be, RDS concluded that the Vedas talked of airplanes, cars and steam engines. It is said that RDS was perhaps distressed at the allegations raised by various Western scholars that the Hindu scriptures were merely mythology and ritual, which no longer had any living truth or force for the thinking minds and were therefore fit to be put away among the relics of the past as an antique record of semi-barbarous worship. This distress is also visible in the writing of Aurobindo Ghosh, who shared RDS’s view. Therefore, RDS re-wrote the entire commentary, saying that the names of Indra, Vayu, Agni, etc. that were so often used in the Vedas, and which have been taken as divine persons, or devas, by most commentators, actually meant material sun, air, fire, etc. and nothing else. In the course of his commentary, where Vayu and Agni were mentioned together, he concluded that steam engines were being discussed and so on. This was done with the purpose of making these scriptures fit for the thinking mind, without realizing that we were only leading to further deviation.

To tell you the truth, when we picked up the Vedas for study, we were of the opinion that if it is God’s revealed text, then it must be of the nature of a torchbearer, which would show that path to the human beings that would lead them to the worship of One God and save them from the scourge of sin and troubled existence. The moment we started reading it, it was apparent that this could not be digested, as it is beyond reason that God would use His energy and time, send Prophets and emissaries, to tell that in future there would be airplanes and steam-engines to carry us or tell us what oils to put in ritual fire, what kind of ladle to use during such oblations, and so on.

Our view was further substantiated when we read Manu, who is largely believed to be the first lawgiver after the Vedas, singing the glory of the Vedas in such un-ambiguous terms as:

The Veda is the source of all Dharma i.e. religion, morality, righteousness and good conduct.
(MANUSMRITI 2-6)

It is unfortunate that the later day translators of the Vedas inferred the value of Vedas from the value given to them by revered sages of earlier times, but forgot the true meaning of the Vedas. Instead of what Manu described Vedas to be, they found rites and rituals, electricity, steam engines and airplanes in the Vedas.

How foolish of us that we claim Vedas to be having a universal appeal due to the reason that they talk about future when steam engines would role and electric gadgets would be part of our life. The fact that several Vedic hymns talk in the future tense and carry words like Vayu and Agni made RDS and few others come to this conclusion. But have we ever thought that the same Vedas, of whose universal nature we are boasting of, would become redundant for the man of the period when they were revealed, in case we were to translate them in such a manner. Neither would they be of any further interest to the growing generations, to whom steam engines, et al are already things of the past.

We are sure your curiosity is aroused! Some of you may be thinking that only a handful of commentators like RDS have translated the Vedas with steam-engines and airplanes in them, whereas the rest of the commentators have certainly not done so. Maharshi Patanjali writes in the Mahabhasya, that there are 101 shakhas (schools of thoughts) of the Yajur Veda. All these commentaries are not available at present except the Kanva, Madhyandini, Taittiriya, Maitrayani, Kathak and Kapishthala. Only six available to us out of the 101 versions!

It can therefore be inferred that RDS’s commentary is either 105th, 110th or any such version but certainly not lesser than the 102nd. Since commentaries or schools of thoughts are based on the understood meaning, this would amount to saying that Yajur Veda alone (containing merely 1984 verses in comparison to Rig Veda’s 10,522) has been understood with at least 102 meanings. If this is so, then what is the real meaning that God intended? God surely must have talked about one straight path, even if He had to send His Messages through various Apostles and emissaries, and not diverse ones as the various Schools of Thoughts suggest.

Here we would like to say that since we believe the Vedas to be God’s words, we must be prepared to accept it as it is, without getting into a sort of inferiority or superiority complex on the basis of its content. The fact that RDS had to do another translation, to silence the criticism of British commentators, highlights his lack of faith in God. Why was he eager to give shape to the God’s words or mould them as per his choice? Why didn’t he accept whatever the Vedas were saying, instead of getting into an inferiority complex as regard to the existing translations, which were being labelled by British commentators as pre-historic or archaic? He should have accepted that since He is Creator and Knower of all that will transpire till the end of this world; His words cannot be termed as lacking foresight or wisdom.

If we believe that God has created us and it is He who has made arrangements for showing us the right path, if we believe that not a single leaf falls without His wish, and if we believe that we are like scrap in the smelting unit of an iron or steel factory that keeps moving on a chain towards inevitable destruction of its material form, then we must accept God’s Word as final, whatever it is. Yes, sincere endeavours to understand that Word in the true sense should be an endless pursuit.

Whether truth is in RDS’s inference or in that of commentators like Sayana and other Western scholars, all should be checked and rechecked on the basis of our reasoning, before we come to believe them. Nothing, not even the arguments put forth by Mohammad Alvi, should be accepted until we find them based on logic and reason, after a sincere study.

To be continued…

The Subject of Kafar (Kafir)

Muslims are often criticized for calling Hindus as kafars. What is the meaning of this word? Are Hindus kafars? Let us see.

“The term ‘Kafar’ (Unbeliever) is derived from the root ‘Kafara’ which means (1) to cover, (2) to deny, (3) to show ingratitude. So ‘Kafar’ means he who hides a thing, or denies it, or is ungrateful to God, or who does not thank God for what He has provided for man. ‘Kafar’ also means a peasant, since he covers the seed. The term is used in one or other of these several senses. Generally it is used to mean one who did not listen to Prophet Mohammad in his time or did not recognize the Supreme Being who had provided one and all the good things of life.

In verses Q 14:32-34 & Q.17: 67 (as numbered in Pickthal’s Translation) the term ‘Kafar’ is used in the sense of ‘ungrateful’ and applied to all humanity.

The term is also applied to the Jews of the Prophet’s time (Q.17:8) since they had neglected their scripture, the Torah. In verse (Q.21: 94), the term is applied to God Himself since He recognizes our rewards or does not hide one’s good work. The same idea is conveyed in the Gita (2:40). In Quran (Q. 29:7) the term means to blot out, to remit, to cover sins. In (Q.4: 150-151), it is pointed out that the real Kafars are those who recognize certain messengers of God and deny others.”

You have seen the meaning of Kafar and its usage in Quran. Now let us see whether the Muslims are justified in calling Hindus as ‘Kafars’. If we take Unbeliever as the meaning, then we cannot call Hindus as ‘Kafars’ as they, or at least a greater percentage of them, believe in the Unity of God. Carrying the same viewpoint further, if the idol-worshippers are called ‘Kafars’, then we must tell that there are a lot many Hindus, the Arya Samajis, who do not believe in idol-worship. In such a situation, ‘Kafar’ will have to be applied on case-to-case basis and not to community on the whole.

In Q.4: 150-151, it is said that Kafars are those who recognize certain messengers of God and deny others. If we take this meaning to be correct, then that would mean that all, including the Christians, the Jews, and the Hindus would come in the fold of Kafar. However, since Muslims do not regard Christians and Jews as Kafars, this means that this meaning is not applicable.

If Kafar is used for denying a tenet of Islam, then that would mean that before the finger is pointed at the Hindus, various sects of Islam would start pointing fingers at each other. We all know that the subject of Caliphate is such where they deny each other’s Caliphs.

What does Kafar mean then? Kafar is used in relation to God. Therefore, does Kafar means one who denies the presence of God? Surely, there are a lot many atheists in this world. This cannot be true, because various messengers of God have said that after sincere attempt to reach the truth, if one comes to conclusion that there is no God, then that person too would be rewarded.

In our view, Kafar means one who knows the truth about God and His Apostles, yet denies them. This has happened in the past when religious books were deliberately distorted and might still continue to happen in future. Such people are Kafars and worthy of great punishment, as per Islam.

Term Kafar seems to be synonymous with the term ‘atatayinah’ or those who have fallen from Dharma. Since the Kauravas had fallen away from the true Vedic teachings regarding God, the Kauravas are called ‘atatayinahs’ in Gita. (I.36). Gita tells that there were few on Kaurava’s side who knew that what Krishna was saying was truth but did not accept it for fear of loss of worldly position and benefits. Drona and Bhima were certainly such people. That Drona and Bhima were the priests of highest ranks, there surely must be several others on their side. In the Manusmriti and other books ‘atatayinah’ are described as those who are incendiary, poisoners, murderers, plunderers and those who commit excesses and a death penalty has been prescribed for them. Manusmriti enjoins: “Kill the atatayinah at sight.”
